While the FAME team didn’t advance to the final competition, as the fourth place team, the members were given the opportunity to do a test run of the final simulation to make sure everything was up to par and working properly. The first, second and third place teams were Sussex County EMS, of Delaware, Leland Fire/Rescue, of North Carolina, and Cape Fear Valley, of North Carolina. “We really didn’t think anything of it until the doc had mentioned it, but that’s what we do on a daily basis,” Martin noted.įollowing the simulations in the preliminary competition, three teams were then selected to move on to the final competition for a chance to win a top prize of $1,000. Both stated that it was FAME’s calmness and strong teamwork during the competition that made the team stand out from the others. “It’s the high acuity, low volume calls that they really try to push forward to us.”Īccording to Martin and Sorg, FAME received the most positive feedback when treating the babies in the last simulation. “In our daily jobs, we use the knowledge that we have, but this competition brought out a lot of things that you don’t get to use on a daily basis,” Zimmerman said. While each level increased in intensity, each team only had 10 minutes to respond and complete each scenario. In the final scenario, teams were tasked with treating two pre-mature “babies” belonging to the patient from the third simulation. The first simulation tested participants’ clinical knowledge with paramedic testing, while the next two simulated a mass casualty incident and a situation with a pregnant patient who suffered from various medical issues.
